Cool Reflections
40 x 50cm Oils & Encaustic on Board

“Cool Refelctions” celebrates the hope and beauty so often overlooked in a frozen moment. What lies beneath the surface of that water? What life awaits eruption in those trees? And what nourishment and protection of the earth's processes are embedded in those layers of snow?
Encaustic And Oils?
Encaustic, is the process of painting with hot wax. It dates back to the ancient Greeks who taught the Egyptians, who then used it on their Mummies. Adding resin to the wax increases the durability and the melt temperature, so these are archival works, destined to last.
I love working in encaustic because I can layer, and carve, and remove, and find stories and histories organically in the wax--using so many different techniques. I use my science background to explore these processes, combining knowledge of the physics of light, the properties of pigments, the viscosities and porosities of mediums, and chemical concepts particularly when it comes to adhesion and archival processes.
