Winter Holds Its Breath explores a moment of suspended stillness, where landscape and reflection soften into one another. Vertical forms emerge and recede, suggesting trees held in quiet balance, their presence echoed and dissolved through layered translucency.
Working in encaustic allows light to be embedded rather than depicted. Wax, pigment, and heat create veils and interruptions, slowing the act of looking and inviting attention to subtle shifts of tone and depth. The surface holds traces of movement while remaining hushed, as if time itself has paused.
The work reflects a seasonal and perceptual threshold — a moment before change, where breath is held and sound recedes. Rather than describing a place, the painting evokes an interior state: attentive, restrained, and quietly luminous.
